The last Zephyrhills baseball player to don No. 14 made quite an impact.
David Eiland, 42, had his number retired during a halftime ceremony of
the Nov. 14 home football game against Ridgewood. He joins Ryan Pickett,
a football player for the Green Bay Packers who had his No. 79 retired
following on Oct. 24. Pickett is a 1998 Zephyrhills graduate. Eiland
(Class of 1984) was a standout pitcher for the Bulldogs and the
University of South Florida before spending 10 years in the major
leagues. Currently, he is the pitching coach for the New York Yankees.
Among numerous supporters were Eiland’s wife, Sandi, and the couple’s
daughters, 15-year-old Nicole and 12-year-old Natalie. Also on hand were
Danny Burgess, a nephew and former Zephyrhills City Council member who
played baseball at Zephyrhills, and athletic director Craig Milburn, who
coached Eiland on the diamond.
“In 30 years I’ve had the pleasure of coaching a lot of athletes here,”
Milburn said. “David was one of the best.” Eiland, who also played
basketball, football and golf at Zephyrhills, was an all-conference
football player in 1983 and earned a scholarship to the University of
Florida as a punter. He later transferred to USF to pitch. As a
Zephyrhills senior, Eiland batted .451 with six home runs while going
10-5 with 108 strikeouts and 17 walks as a right-handed pitcher. His
high school career numbers included a 24-12 record with four saves. He
fanned 326 and walked 68 in 233 innings. As a major leaguer, Eiland was
drafted in 1987 by the Yankees and pitched for New York, the San Diego
Padres and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He went 12-27 with a 5.74 ERA.
A claim to fame came in 1992 when Eiland hit a home run for the Padres
in his first major league at-bat. He also was a body double for Kevin
Costner in the 1999 movie, For Love of the Game. Milburn lauded Eiland
for not only his talent, but strong work ethic. In an emotional tribute,
Milburn, speaking for Eiland’s late father and former Zephyrhills Police
Chief Bill Eiland, said, “David, I love you very much and I’m extremely
proud of you.” While signing autographs afterward, Eiland responded,
“I’m very proud of (his father). He was my hero.”
