The 3 man team of
Rick Doerr, Hugh Freund and Tampa resident Brad Kendell is sponsored
by AlphaGraphics and will compete in events all over the world in
preparation for the 2012 Paralympic games to be held in London,
England. Team USA674 consists of three men with indomitable spirits
who have quite a resume of accomplishments.
Excerpt from
http://sailingteams.ussailing.org <They were recently named
February Team of the Month by the Alphagraphics US Olympic Committee.
The Sonar team of Rick Doerr, Hugh Freund and Brad Kendell compete
in a 3 person open keelboat class and had a stellar February of
competition with two back-to-back events. In the St Petersburg, FL
N.O.O.D. Regatta, they finished second among a fleet of 10 competing
boats, both able-bodied and disabled sailing teams. They missed the
gold by one point after three days of racing. The following week,
they won the inaugural Sail to Prevail Paralympic Regatta in St.
Petersburg, which featured the top American and Canadian Paralympic
hopefuls. During the 10-race series, the racing was extremely close
among the top U.S. Sonar teams (all are members of US Sailing Team
AlphaGraphics), but it was their consistency that brought home the
victory. In January in Miami, FL, spectacular wind and sunny skies
were the backdrop for day 5 of racing at US SAILING’s Rolex Miami
OCR. In the final day of racing for Paralympic courses Rick
Doerr, Brad Kendell and Hugh Freund were top Americans in the Sonar
class, ending the regatta in 4th overall.>
Brad Kendell, a Tampa
native who attended USF and Clearwater High School has been a member
of the
US SAILING TEAM ALPHAGRAPHICS since 2007
and was a member of the 2010 US
SAILING's Paralympic Team of the Year.
Brad also
fishes competitively and was an angler fishing for the KHS & S
Construction team in 2008 when they won the Professional Tarpon
Tournament in Boca Grande in Week 4 and also competed in the 2008
Red Bull Flugtag in Tampa. His sailing team also finished 1st
in the 2009 America Regatta and the 2010 Sperry NOOD in St Pete. He
has competed in Greece in the IFDS World Championships as well as
traveling across the US. OurtownFLA.com would like for everyone to

TRAVERSE Horse Show
Coming up at Lake Park
TRAVERSE
(Trauma Resolution And Victims’ Essential Recovery Services) was
originally incorporated as a Florida Not-for-Profit Corporation in
August of 1993. They will be hosting a family fun horse show on April 16
at Lake Park beginning at 10am. The event will consist of Barrel racing,
poles, flag race, keyhole, texas barrels and pony express. Enter all
events for $25 for free to watch! Come out and support TRAVERSE.
TRAVERSE is a program of experiential group therapy which
works with an equestrian theme to assist children in the healing process
from trauma or loss. Horsemanship provides the context and motivation
for group treatment which integrates relationship, developmental,
cognitive, behavioral, trauma, and group theory.
The program is specifically designed to meet the needs of children who
have been physically, sexually, or emotionally abused, or children who
have lost family to death or divorce. Empowerment is the hallmark of
healing from victimization and managing a 1,000 pound horse at a lope is
undeniably empowering. Beginning in 1994 TRAVERSE started providing
services to individual children who had been referred by a local mental
health agency. While each of the children had been diagnosed as severely
disturbed and treatment had been initiated in a traditional mental
health setting, the children’s persistent opposition to, or refusal of,
this treatment, rendered it useless. After a year of working in an
accepting, supportive, and challenging environment with horses, each of
these children showed significant improvement in family adjustment, and
school performance. Additionally, they each attended a community horse
show and ribboned. This success was the catalyst for the implementation
of a formal, group program in 1996 with similar positive results. In
May, 2008, the “Storm Riders” were the 20th group to graduate from the
program.
Over the years, TRAVERSE has spent much time and effort in
professionalizing its program. Organizational tasks, such assecuring a
501(c)3 from the Internal Revenue Service and tax-exempt status from the
state were important first steps. TRAVERSE attained the status of a
NARHA PREMIER ACCREDITED CENTER in 2002.

Special Olympic Games
at Land O Lakes Rec Center
Special Olympics began in Pasco County in 1975 with 175
participants. They currently have over 900 registered Special
Olympians in Pasco County and offer competition at the local, area,
state and international levels. The mission of Special Olympics is
to provide year round sports training and athletic competition for
persons eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities.
Volunteers are an important part of their program utilizing over 500
volunteers a year from local schools and the community. In Pasco
County, they offer over 16 sports. There is no cost to the athletes
or their families to participate in their program as they rely
solely on donations & fundraisers to obtain the approximately
$70,000 per year to run their program. The money is used to cover
the participants’ registration fees, uniforms, transportation and
ribbons. Donations also will be used to purchase equipment and
supplies needed to operate their local Games. All coordinators,
coaches, volunteers and chaperones work from the heart! Please help
support the Pasco County branch of the Special Olympians in our
community. You can visit their website at

Ever
wondered how the pro’s catch fish? Do you get confused
when you walk down the fishing isle and see 14 types of
line, 67 types of plastic bait, 36 different types of
hooks and let’s not even try to explain the rows of
poles? If so, you missed a great event!
More than 20 local residents joined Captain Scott Keith
and Gary Guy of Tampa Bay Inshore Charters for
Get Out and Fish Tampa Bay, a free community fishing
workshop. “This was a great day for the fishing
community” said Captain Keith. “Families, husbands and
wives, grandfathers and grandsons gathered to talk about
the great sport of fishing.”
But if you missed it, have no fear.
Get Out and Fish Tampa Bay will run monthly
throughout the fall at Feed Depot off Nebraska and
Bearss Avenue. “My pop taught me how to throw a cast net
at age 8” said Guy as he spoke to the audience. “He sat
on the porch and watched me throw into the grass. It
took practice and to now pass on what I know to others
is a great feeling”.
If you have a fishing question, visit

The ingredients
seemed just right for
Zephyrhills on Friday
night.
Up by two points at
Bulldogs Stadium, a
defense that hassled
both Land O' Lakes
quarterbacks the entire
night, a freshman
controlling the Gators
offense, Land O' Lakes
with a fourth-and-15
and, oh, 43 seconds left
on the game clock.
But when Land
O' Lakes receiver Nick
Castellano caught a
28-yard pass on that
fourth down, while
nearly prone on his back
and surrounded by about
three defenders, it
looked as if the spell
was broken. Land O'
Lakes went on to score
the final touchdown of
the game for a 14-9
victory. 'It's hard for
me to say anything.
Maybe it was a stroke of
luck,' Land O' Lakes
coach John Benedetto
said about the final
scoring pass from
Stephen Weatherford to
Alex Robinson.

Mitchell defeats River Ridge 55 to 14 -
Sept 14
In what was expected to
be an explosive matchup of Pasco
County's most prolific offenses,
Mitchell left little doubt which one
was, and still is, the best. The
Mustangs piled up 588 yards, including
256 passing and 77 rushing by
quarterback Tate Humphrey, in a 55-14
romp against River Ridge, which had
entered the game with a county-best 38
points per game average. 'We've got a
pretty good offense,' Mitchell coach
Scott Schmitz said. 'Our kids catch the
ball. I don't know if we had any drops
tonight, or if we've had any drops this
season so far. They're pretty tough.

Look out Pasco County, the folks at Pasco High School now has its
own internet radio show that fans can tune in to each Wednesday
evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Hosted by Pirates girls basketball coach John Edwards, the show was
helped by the fact that the Pirates were able to pull off a come
from behind win against the Land O’Lakes Gators Friday night at
home. The show and featured football coach Tom McHugh and members
of his coaching staff going over details of the Land O’Lakes game,
their team, and their upcoming game against Sebring Friday night.
They will try to transmit the game via the Internet Friday night if
possible.
You can submit your own question by e mailing the show through their
website
www.pascopiratesradio.com
or hand deliver them and have dinner while you watch the show live
at the Dade City Beef O’Brady’s. John Edwards did an excellent job
of moderating the show and keeping the dialog fast paced and
interesting. Edwards will continue his coaching duties as the girls
basketball coach till the call from ESPN comes in.

This weeks game stories from
Tampa Bay Online
Pasco 15 - Land O' Lakes 10
<> Page down to see Photo Galleries!
There was a moment when the Pasco
High Pirates couldn't breathe Friday
night.
It was a torturously long moment when a
glaring yellow flag miles behind the
celebration threatened to negate
Demetrious Larry's only catch, a 77-yard
highlight reel touchdown pass from the
15-year-old arm of D.J. Clower.
This time, the referee had only good
news for Pasco as he extended his arm
toward Land O' Lakes, filling the
Pirates with all the fire and momentum
they needed to block, swat and tackle
out the remaining 4 minutes, 49 seconds
on the clock, giving Pasco the 15-10 win
against the Gators.
"When I saw [the flag] I was like,
'Please, not us,'" Clower said. "And
then when they said Land O' Lakes I just
started screaming."
As a handful of crazy, body-painted
students ran onto the field at the Jim
Valentine Athletic Complex on Friday,
the dreaded curse that has hung over the
River Ridge football team finally faded.
It has been a long time — 23
regular-season games, 34 months, 1,052
days — since the Royal Knights last won.
But Friday night there was little doubt
which was the better team as River Ridge
rolled past first-year Sunlake 50-0.
"Finally," said River Ridge senior
Markel Bell, "the streak is over."
After a 30-minute lightning delay, Bell
was the unquestioned star of the game,
amassing 148 all-purpose yards and three
touchdowns. He opened the scoring in the
first quarter after catching a short
pass from quarterback Blake Spinks
(3-for-4, 107 yards, three touchdowns)
and turning it up the right sideline for
a 38-yard reception.
Senior running back Byronell Arline rushed for 136 yards
on 15 carries to lead Ridgewood. Late in the first
quarter, Arline broke a 7-7 tie with a 50-yard TD run.
Four Hudson defenders had him in their grasp, but were
unable to deny him the goal line.
Tate Humphrey accounted for 261 total yards and four
touchdowns as Mitchell pulled away in the second half to
cruise to a win at Mustang Stadium. Humphrey showed his
quick-strike ability on the second play of the game when
he faked a handoff, rolled left and ran 35 yards for a
touchdown. He also threw a 55-yard touchdown to Tyrone
Hendrix.
Senior running back Marquis Thomas led the Wildcats'
attack with 142 yards rushing on 29 carries and two
touchdowns. Thomas' highlight run came in the first
quarter when he raced 67 yards down the sideline for
Wharton's first touchdown of the game.
