Moffitt Cancer Center Groundbreaking Ceremony for a new campus in Pasco to Honor Agricultural Commissioner and former Florida Senate President Wilton Simpson

Moffitt Cancer Center held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new campus in Pasco County on Friday, January 20, 2023, at 10 am at Speros FL Campus, 16828 Ridge Road, Land O’Lakes, FL 34638.

The groundbreaking and naming celebration for Speros FL officially kicked off construction of the 775-acre Pasco County campus to be used for the future of revolutionary cancer treatment and research. The campus will feature 16 million square feet of lab, office, manufacturing, and clinical space.

The groundbreaking honored Agricultural Commissioner and former Florida Senate President Wilton Simpson for his long-standing commitment to Moffitt’s mission and his legacy of supporting the growth of the scientific community for the benefit of all Floridians.

“You cannot separate cancer research and treatment from hope, which is the root of the name Speros FL and the driving force behind all that we do at Moffitt Cancer Center,” said Dr. Patrick Hwu, Moffitt president and CEO. “Our vision is to be the global epicenter for personalized oncology care and leading research that will revolutionize the way we prevent, find and treat cancer. We look forward to breaking ground on this innovative community and are proud to announce the name, which is an important step in this historic project.”

The name, Speros, is a derivative of the Latin verb “Sperare,” meaning “to hope” or “to look forward to” and was announced in December 2022.
