Celebrations at the Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch were from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and include a tribute to the Florida Highwaymen Painters’ collection, the origin of Florida Community Colleges and the Magnificent Twelve, and African American medical innovations during campus tours of the state-of-the-art Nursing Program facilities.

Celebrations at the Instructional Performing Arts Center were from 5-7 p.m. and include entertainment and tours of the theatre, dance, music, and digital media programs in partnership with the Maurice Allen Jazz Trio featuring John Lamb (former Bassist for Duke Ellington) and Motown sounds from Shawn Brown Entertainment and Arlene Brook's Jazz Unplugged, who pay tribute to Florida's African American entertainers and Tampa’s famous Jackson House.

Davina Jones, Ph.D., provost, Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch, stressed the importance of hosting and participating in community events and building relationships in Wesley Chapel, one of the fastest [C1] growing communities in the U.S.

“Our presence and involvement in the Wesley Chapel community allows us to help create a great model community together that works well for all people,” said Jones.

PHSC has woven important themed cultural elements into each of its 50th Anniversary celebrations corresponding with the nationally recognized dates of the year.

“We believe in recognizing the diverse communities we serve every year by highlighting their presence and contributions,” said Jones.

“I really feel like PHSC tries to reach out and be inclusive of everyone,” said Osvaldo Bravo a current student who attended the PHSC East Campus 50th Anniversary and Hispanic Heritage Month celebration event in September.

For 50 years PHSC has driven transformational change by providing educational opportunities within our community comprised of a multitude of ethnicities, backgrounds and cultures.

“We are proud of our efforts throughout the years to have served more than 60,000 students from our communities,” said Timothy L. Beard, Ph.D., PHSC president.

Many students, employees, retirees, special guests and visitors have attended the events throughout this year of celebration.
