AdventHealth Center Ice restarts hockey and figure skating programs for youths, adults & even public skating is back

By Steve Lee Now that restrictions from the coronavirus are easing, AdventHealth Center Ice is ramping up its programs for youths and adults. Hockey, figure skating and even public skating programs are back.

“We’ve got all our league’s going back now,” said Gordie Zimmermann, the facility’s owner.

The restart coincides with a recent National Hockey League announcement that the Stanley Cup playoffs will begin in July with teams like the Tampa Bay Lightning given the okay to resume practicing this month.

“That’s going to really put us in the forefront of people’s minds,” Zimmermann said.

Tryouts for the Tampa Bay Crunch are under way. The Crunch, an elite level youth program founded in 2017, consist of six travel teams that compete in nationwide tournaments.

“It’s time to get the rust off, to get going again,” said coach Nick Lindberg, a former pro hockey player from Sweden. said.

Added coach Luke Zimmermann, Gordie’s son who played for Wiregrass Ranch and now skates for the University of South Florida, “These guys have been off the ice for a while. It’s just getting back to the basics.”

At an adjacent rink, coaches Vinny Dispenza and John Zimmerman worked with figure skaters. Both noted that the break allowed skaters to work on off-ice conditioning. Now, Dispenza said, “it’s just trying to get them back in a positive mindset.”

The upcoming schedule at AdventHealth Center Ice includes a national roller hockey tournament, July 2-11, and elite level prospect camp, July 26-Aug. 2.
