Land O’ Lakes and Pasco had to continue their season opener on Monday due to a problem with lights at John Benedetto Stadium. The Pirates, coming off a 2-8 season and seeking their first playoff spot since 2013, defeated the Gators 35-14.

Pasco was led by Malcolm Gibbs, who ran for 115 yards and a touchdown. Ethan Forrester led the Land O’ Lakes offense, passing for 172 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Meanwhile, Wesley Chapel and Cypress Creek had never met on the gridiron until last Friday night. That was the start of what will be an annual tradition labeled as the Boyette Brawl, named after a prominent farming family in the area.

The Wildcats drew first blood in the rivalry with a 19-0 win over the Coyotes.

Gavin Paul returned a fumble for a touchdown, Brenden Maddox ran for a 6-yard score and Fletcher Martin added field goals of 32 and 43 yards. Defensively, linebackers Jordan McCaslin and Maddox each had more than 10 tackles with Nick Sheldon contributing two sacks.

Also on Friday, Wiregrass Ranch and Zephyrhills squared off for their fifth straight season opener and the Bulls made it three out of five with a 43-13 win. Wiregrass Ranch got four touchdown runs from Corneil McCrary and a scoring pass from Rocco Becht, son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneer tight end Anthony Becht, in his debut.

McCrary gained 94 yards, Nate Miller rushed for 106 yards on seven carries and Keith Walker scored on a 70-yard reverse. Becht passed for 64 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown to Walker.
