Wesley Chapel faced fourth down twice inside Wiregrass Ranch territory during the first half of Friday night’s season opener. And twice the Wildcats came away with touchdowns, paving the way to a 20-6 home win over the Bulls. “This is such a big step for us,†Wesley Chapel senior quarterback Keegan Tanner said. And for Tanner, who followed up a strong performance in the preseason game with a gem against his team’s rival. After Wiregrass Ranch took a 6-0 lead on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Jake Day to Angel Quinones, Wesley Chapel faced fourth and 15 late in the first quarter.
The 5-foot-11 Tanner rolled right to avoid a rush, stepped up and fired a 35-yard pass to receiver Deyon Cox in the end zone to give the Wildcats a 7-6 lead. “That was just like a relief right there …†said Tanner, who moved back from receiver to quarterback for his senior year. “Once that happened, it just relieved all my pressure, and I just had fun from there.†read more...
