Seventh Annual Celebration Festival of Peace Week at Pasco-Hernando State College
Tuesday, Oct 07, 2014 | On Target Page: Dade City, Greater Pasco County, Land O'Lakes, Lutz, New Tampa, Trinity & West Pasco, Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills, Pasco Hernando State College PHSC
Buddhist monks constructed a sand mandala on Monday, October 6 for the seventh annual celebration of Peace Week at Pasco-Hernando State College. Peace Week—Resilience, October 6–9, featured events at all PHSC campuses. Forming the mandala, Sanskrit word for circle, is a tradition associated with the most profound and elaborate Buddhist ceremonies in Tibet. Before laying down bits of colored sand, monks mark a large surface with geometric measurements to bring the message of generating compassion and overcoming anger and hatred. The design took days to complete as small tubes, funnels and scrapers were used to carefully place the sand.
Also PHSC hosted keynote speakers, guest lecturers, exhibits, presentations, interactive workshops, peace and religion festivals, and musical performances for the Seventh Annual Peace Week, October 6–9.
The 2014 Peace Week theme was Resilience. Each year PHSC pauses to recognize that peace is not simply the absence of war, but a constantly changing and fragile ideology that can be threatened if people are not given the opportunity to express them–selves and connect with one another. Despite worldwide volatility and political pressures, we must, in our increasingly diverse and technologically advanced society, constantly seek understanding and global perspective.
Peace Week events were held on PHSC’s West Campus in New Port Richey, East Campus in Dade City, North Campus in Brooksville, Spring Hill Campus, and Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch in Wesley Chapel.
