Denise Hopkinson
started her small scrap-booking store in 1998 when scrapbooking was just
starting to take off. Life was great in the small 800 square foot shop
where Mrs. Grossman and Frances Meyer reigned queens and the toughest
option was whether to get an 8 1/2x11 or 12x12 album! She quickly
outgrew that space, moved across from the Publix at the Florida

advantage of every single space she has in her shop to display a huge
variety of merchandise. They are taking that a step forward and moving
merchandise next door to the classroom area. There will still be room

Letters from our Soldiers |
via Treats for
Troops |
www.TreatsForTroops.Info |
|
Treats for Troops is a local non profit charity that sends much needed
supplies to our troops in remote fighting areas. Karin King and her
husband started Treats for Troops when Karin decided to begin baking
cookies for our troops. She quickly received thank yous for the home
baked goods as well as requests for much needed supplies. They currently
send hundreds of boxes of basic items to our brave men and women in some
of the most isolated areas in the regions we are currently deployed in.
Karin still bakes up her homemade cookies however and during the
holidays recruits local community members to help bake and sends a
massive amount to those who wont be home for the holidays. To find out
ALL about how you can support Karin and her efforts, visit her website
at
www.treatsfortroops.info
Below are some of the letters she has received! |
|
WOW!!! Thx so much. Big smiles all
around!! We received the packages today and man, we had a GREAT time
divvying up all the cookies and goodies. The posters were a huge hit
too. They now adorn our MWR room and various living spaces. Thx so much.
You obviously "know" us and our situation over here away from "the
world" and all that we love and enjoy. The cookies were all fantastic!
The home made ones were great and several of the guys far more enjoyed
the home made over the others. Again, WOW! Thx very, very much for the
goodies. We instantly called for a movie night with all our treats!!
Needless to say, our movie night was like none other in such a very long
time. Very awesome, very good, very kind. Please thank all who were
involved and who pitched in for our care package! I feel as though I
just didn't say enough!!! I forgot to thank you for the essential items
and the mardi gras beads were a neat, yet hilarioius addition to our
decorations. Oh, THANKS very much for the awesome coffee!!! And the very
nice letters and notes from families and young ones like Morgan from
Tampa who prays for us with his parents (and his dog!! lol). Natalie
wrote us a nice note on an amazingly beautiful card, and a heartfelt
thanks to all the other folks who wrote us nice words of encouragement
and thoughtfulness.
How wonderful, truly great it is to receive greetings and well wishes
from you, Jim and our fellow countrymen. The little ones bring tears to
our eyes as each of us think of our own children we leave home while we
fight world evil. Thanks so very much to the McGay family, Hisey Family,
Marilyn, Jasmine, Linda Wallace, Jamie and Gayle from Tampa. Their
prayers, appreciation for our service and well wishes bring smiles to
our hearts and have been well received. We posted their cards and
letters around our Morale Welfare and Recreation room. Please tell them
we love them and because we do, we gladly place our strength, blood, and
lives in harms way to protect our people and way of life! It is truly a
valiant, honorable America we live in today and may God bless us all in
our cause for freedom and in our effort in putting down the evil we
continue to fight.
Thanks so much for the wonderful goodies, the great coffee and well
wishes!!! It was all so very well received. Your all very special! We
are honored to fight for you and our great nations cause for freedom and
to worship our mindful and loving God in the manner in which we believe
to be true. And that is what it's all about! Your friend and soldier at
the very front,MSG Craig
C. Clark, Afghanistan
Take care now. |
|
I recently received a care package
with your homemade cookies included. Thank you...it was so nice to get
such delicious treats. Please know that your commitment to support the
troops is very much appreciated! In addition to your homemade treats,
every care package includes a healthy amount of 'motivation' and
'encouragement' from home. Thank you very much for your sacrifices to
make this possible!

Dear Karin and the rest at "Treats For
Troops"
I wanted to send a big thank you from myself and the rest of the
platoon. I am pleased to know that there are still people like yourself
that appreciate what we do but I can not express how much we appreciate
your support. The silly string that was sent was used to search for trip
wires however, a lot of it was also used to my squad leaders birthday.
MUCH NEEDED FUN.
thank you again and keep in touch

Connections Job Development
|
Program Graduates
|
|
On
February 23, Connections 'graduated' the first class to
complete a four-part customer service training. Led by
volunteer business coach, Joseph Trangata, a
nationally-recognized business development and training
professional, the group of Connections job seekers came
together to improve their customer service skills and learn
new ones.
Participant Rich R. reports, "This was a great class! Joe
was awesome and even though I'm a professional with years of
experience, I learned new ways of interacting with
customers, both internal and external."
Retiring last summer but unable
to ‘sit still’, Joe Trangata is a much in demand consultant
to large corporations statewide. “When we asked
companies what it is they really need in the way of
training, the overwhelming majority indicated customer
service training for their employees,” said Trangata.
As he explained, there is a disconnect between what
employees are trained to do, skills related to their jobs,
and their ability to deliver consistent, quality customer
service. Many employers have had to tighten budgets so
much and cut their HR training budgets. Customer
service training gets overlooked and it is a key piece that
can make or break a company, regardless of size.
“Connections was able to offer
this high-caliber class because Joe volunteered his time and
materials; he normally commands a price way beyond what we,
or many area small businesses could invest in”, stated
Judith Tilton, Connections Executive Director. “We are
grateful for his services and feel honored that our clients
are able to work with him at no charge.” Tilton reports
that another class will be offered next month and area
employers will be have the chance to enroll employees at a
nominal contribution to the non-profit. The job
seekers who completed the 8-hr. training now have one more
tool to set them apart from the competition.
If you
want to become a Customer Service Superstar or jump start
your job search, start with Connections Orientation program,
which is offered twice weekly. Call Connections at
727-849-7424 to register. Cost is FREE!
Connections Job Development Program, based in New Port
Richey since 1991, assists unemployed and under-employed
adults by helping them gain skills necessary to conduct a
successful job search and make a connection with area
employers. A 501(c)3 non-profit, all services are provided
to employers and job seekers at no charge. Connections
receives funding from the State of Florida and United Way of
Pasco, in addition to generous donations from clubs and
organizations, churches and individuals. Connections also
operates the Good Connections Thrift Shoppe, a ‘boutique’
resale store at 6636 US HWY 19 in New Port Richey (just
north of Main Street). Good Connections is open Monday –
Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM; donations are accepted daily.
For information about Connections, call the office Monday

Kerstyn is ready to plant flowers in
memory of her loved one March 8 at Gulfside Regional
Hospice’s Bereavement Center.
|
Children who attend Gulfside’s Mending Hearts Kids’ support
groups celebrated the changing of the seasons by planting
flowers at Gulfside’s Bereavement Center in the Children’s
Healing Garden on March 8.
“The children plant in the garden
seasonally,” said Sonia Quinones, Gulfside’s director of
bereavement and volunteers. “During the planting, we explain
the circle of life – that all that is born has a lifetime,
and at the end of that lifetime, people, animals and flowers
die.”John Lamm, from Home Depot in Port Richey, has been
involved with this project for the last five years. Home
Depot provides the flowers and mulch and Lamm helps the
children with planting the flowers in the garden. “Planting
of the flowers gives the bereavement counselors an
opportunity to talk about death and new beginnings,” said
Quinones. “Everything has a beginning and an end – the
flowers represent a new beginning. Once the seasons change,
the memories of the flowers and our loved ones will still
be in our minds and hearts.” After the planting of the
garden, the children had a pizza party and ice cream. All
received a special stuffed animal to commemorate the
experience.
The mission of Gulfside Regional Hospice is to
provide compassionate, quality care to individuals and their
loved ones as they face life-limiting illnesses. All
bereavement services are provided free of charge to Pasco
County residents regardless of previous participation with
hospice, and includes support groups, the Mending Hearts
Kids’ Program and individual counseling. For more

Buy Now? Sell Now? |
Tips from Area Realtors |
|
If
you are one of the MANY buyers sitting on the fence waiting
for values to go down even further, the link below is a must
read. Fact is, if interest rates go up even just half a
point, any potential gain in lower property values will be
eaten up by higher payments. A payment increase of just $50
a month will cost you an additional $78,000 over the life of
the loan. Now, consider what will happen if we lose Freddie
Mac and Fannie Mae as this article suggests we might. This
could lead to changes that will mean more expensive
mortgages, with higher fees and, probably, higher interest
rates, larger down payments and, in the near term, fewer
lenders to choose from. This unfortunately doesn't only
affect buyers, but sellers as well. Tougher and more
expensive mortgages will lead to fewer homes selling which
will increase supply in a market in which there is already
an abundance of inventory. More supply leads to lower
prices. The bottom line is if you are buying, buy now and if
you are selling, now is the time because it will more than
likely be much tougher to sell in the future.

Wesley Chapel Republican Club Meeting |
Welcomes Guest Speaker
Mike Wells |
|
The Wesley Chapel Republican Club
was pleased to have Pasco County Property Appraiser Mike
Wells as their Guest Speaker this month. Wells explained the
functions of his office and the challenges Pasco
County faces from the whiplash of our boom-bust economy. In
1997 Pasco County had eight billion dollars in taxable
income and in 2007, ten short years that number had
increased to 30 billion dollars. Last year that number had
decreased to 20 billion dollars and Wells predicted it would
bottom out to 2004 levels of 17.5 billion which will
continue the pressure for cutbacks and layoffs in our
overburdened County operations and School system. They also
had a special presentation in honor of Past President Peter
Hanzel. Contact Mike Moore at
wcrepublican@att.net for
more information or call 813-777-6171. Their meetings are
held the 2nd Thursday of each month. |

Habitat
for Humanity |
in Land O'Lakes |
|
Habitat for Humanity of East &
Central Pasco celebrated the completion of construction on a
home, in Land O' Lakes at a dedication ceremony Saturday,
March 12, 2011 on Spokane Road. The new homeowner, Kristi
Bourne, tearfully thanked all those who worked so hard to
help her reach this goal. A group of students from Penn
State traveled here to work on Habitat homes during their
Spring Break. They helped put the finishing touches on this
home and were present for the dedication.
Pastor - Reverend Dr. David Brockhoff
of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church gave the invocation. Jeanie
Germain Habitat Board Chair and John Finnerty, Habitat
executive director led the program. After explaining that
the Bourne family had performed 400 sweat equity hours
working on their home and the homes of others as a
requirement for becoming Habitat homeowners, Anna Carrillo,
a habitat homeowner introduced Kristi Bourne and helped with
the presentation of symbolic gifts and a family Bible. East
Pasco Quilters presented Kristi with a beautiful heirloom
quality quilt. Chris Hensley, construction supervisor,
presented the family with the key to their new home.
At the end of the ceremony, the Bourne
family cut the ribbon that that hung across the doorway and
invited supporters inside for a tour of the home. Inside the
home were housewarming gifts donated by the Tampa Bay
Tootsies.
Through donations of money and materials and volunteer
labor, Habitat for Humanity of East & Central Pasco was able
to build the home and sell it at an affordable price. The
Bourne family purchased the home with a no-profit zero
interest loan, and their monthly mortgage payments will be
used to build more Habitat houses.
Habitat has an important event coming
up, National Women Build Week April 30 - May 8 (Mother's
day). National Women Build Week challenges women to devote
at least one day to the effort to eliminate poverty housing.
Women make a difference in their communities by building
homes and raising awareness of local housing needs.
The Women Build program empowers women
to build Habitat for Humanity homes, enabling them to
positively impact the lives of children by making home
ownership a present reality for families. Women Build is not
about excluding men; it's about including women. Please
register and join our local Women Build visit

Trinity Carrillo
receives |
President's Volunteer Service Award |
|
|
Trinity Carrillo was caught by surprise at his school when Kaci
Wubbena, Crystal Paoloemilio, and Stephanie Black from Habitat
for Humanity of East & Central Pasco arrived during morning
announcements. Trinity was even more surprised when they
presented him with the President's Volunteer Service Award, a
letter from President Obama, and a gold pin with The White House
logo. President Obama's letter congratulated Carrillo and
thanked him for helping to address the most pressing needs in
his community and our country."Trinity Carrillo has completed
more than 200 volunteer hours with Habitat for Humanity in the
last 6 months and continues to be an ambassador for the
non-profit charity. Habitat wrote to the White House and
completed the necessary paperwork for Trinity to receive the
award" said Stephanie Black, director of development and public
relations.
Trinity's mother Anna Carrillo attended a Habitat Application
Workshop at Lacoochee Elementary School in September 2010 and
applied to purchase a Habitat home. The Carrillo's bought a
Habitat home in February 2011 with a zero-interest mortgage.
Anna and Trinity started volunteering with Habitat in October
and haven't stopped. Trinity has volunteered at the Dade City
ReStore, spoken at community meetings, and at a Habitat
fundraiser. Trinity welcomes other volunteers, spreads the word
about the Habitat program, and tells others what having a decent
home means to him. Trinity also worked on his own Habitat home.
"Trinity Carrillo is a great advocate for Habitat for Humanity
of East & Central Pasco. I wish we had 100 more just like him"
said Black. |

Academy at the Lakes’ 12th annual production, Oliver! The
Musical was a major hit at the Center for the Performing Arts at
Wesley Chapel High School. A production company with over 200
students from kindergarten to seniors wowed the pack house with
their singing and acting abilities.
Faculty, students and parents joined
forces to create the stage, and the hand made costumes. The
orchestral music was directed by Mark Heller and Katherine
Vargas. The production was overseen by director Chris Holcom
(Academy faculty, Jobsite Theater actor-director) and producers
Morse and Gary Compton.
Oliver! The musical is based on
Charles Dickens novel "Oliver Twist," The story follows little
Oliver, an orphan and his misadventures in 18th Century England.
As the story begins, young Oliver (senior Ali Buckman) is seen
working at an orphanage. Following another disappointing, yet
predictable, evening meal of gruel, the orphans are still very
hungry. Oliver's journey outside of the orphanage begins when he
has the audacity to ask for more. This error in judgment leads
to Mr. Bumble and the Widow Corney (Cody Diaz and Alexis
Setteducato) taking him out into the street and selling him to
the local undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry (Conor Zhang).
"Unfortunately, Oliver finds his new home as hostile as the
last, and he makes the desperate decision to run away. He
eventually makes his way to London where he meets The Artful
Dodger (Sara Dobish) who is eager to introduce him to a new and
exciting life as part of Fagin's (Jason Pitcairn) gang. The next
day, he meets Nancy (Shannon O'Donnell), who shows him some
motherly affection and tries to protect him."

Rep. Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel |
Official Speaker Designate of Florida |
|
House Republicans met Monday to
honor Rep. Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, tabbing him
officially as speaker designate who will wield the gavel before
the Florida House when the 2012 elections end.
As expected, Weatherford was elected without opposition
from the Republican caucus. Speaking from the well of the House,
Weatherford praised “servant leadership” and said he will try to
be a “servant leader” in his time as speaker. Weatherford
praised “the promise of Florida” and, while he avoided talking
about specific policy, the future speaker touched on his
principles. “Our rights come from God, not from government,”
said the future speaker, taking aim at legalized abortion.
“All life is precious and worthy
of our respect. We can never call ourselves a truly just society
as long as we fail to recognize the rights of the unborn.” |
