Guest Congressman Rich
Nugent
Photos and story by Anthony V. Masella Jr.
The
Republican Club of Land O'Lakes hosted Congressman Rich
Nugent of the Fifth District of Florida at the Groves Golf
and Country Club in Land O’Lakes. Congressman Nugent says
that a smaller, more efficient government combined with tax
relief for families and small businesses is the key to
getting our economy back on track. He has signed on to the
Fair Tax Bill and is a strong defender of the Second
Amendment. Congressman Nugent supports the House Budget
Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's "Path to Prosperity,"
recently passed. “The Federal Government continues to grow
and grow” said Nugent recalling Ronald Reagan’s words: "A
government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll
ever see on this earth.""One
of the reasons I got into this," he said, "is because of my
three sons. My parents provided a better life for their
family, a better opportunity for their sons to succeed and I
want to do the same for mine by giving our economy the tools
to start moving again." Speaking like a man who spend much
of his adult life in law enforcement Nugent said, "At this
point, it's like a hostage situation, the House GOP
leadership must bring its negotiators and its SWAT team and
unlike the last time, offer no hints about what's off the
table”. "When you give the orders to kick down the door you
have to understand there are things outside our control" he
said, “but we cannot fail to face these issues head on and
offer real solutions to get to solve them.

The Wesley Chapel Republican Club
was pleased to have Pasco County Property Appraiser Mike
Wells as their Guest Speaker this month. Wells explained the
functions of his office and the challenges Pasco
County faces from the whiplash of our boom-bust economy. In
1997 Pasco County had eight billion dollars in taxable
income and in 2007, ten short years that number had
increased to 30 billion dollars. Last year that number had
decreased to 20 billion dollars and Wells predicted it would
bottom out to 2004 levels of 17.5 billion which will
continue the pressure for cutbacks and layoffs in our
overburdened County operations and School system. They also
had a special presentation in honor of Past President Peter
Hanzel. Contact Mike Moore at

House Republicans met Monday to
honor Rep. Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, tabbing him
officially as speaker designate who will wield the gavel before
the Florida House when the 2012 elections end. As expected, Weatherford was elected without opposition
from the Republican caucus. Speaking from the well of the House,
Weatherford praised “servant leadership” and said he will try to
be a “servant leader” in his time as speaker. Weatherford
praised “the promise of Florida” and, while he avoided talking
about specific policy, the future speaker touched on his
principles. “Our rights come from God, not from government,”
said the future speaker, taking aim at legalized abortion.
“All life is precious and worthy
of our respect. We can never call ourselves a truly just society
as long as we fail to recognize the rights of the unborn.”

Jeb Bush Sportsmens Dinner
by Pasco County Republican Executive Committee
Florida Senate President Mike
Haridopolos, declared candidate for US Senate speaks to the
crowd of Republicans at the Jeb Bush Sportsmen’s Dinner held
at the Dan Cannon Auditorium in Dade City.…Two
Pasco County leaders, Ron Oakley, Chair, Governing Board of
the Southwest Florida Water Management District and Pasco
County School Superintendent Heather Fiorentino discuss
challenges facing the County following the Jeb Bush
Sportsmen’s Dinner held at the Dan Cannon Auditorium in Dade
City.
Sen. Haridopolos has stood up for Floridians against more
government, higher taxes, and unrestrained spending in Tallahassee. He
is a co-founder of the Freedom Caucus that led the fight against tax
increases in the Florida House and is currently working on legislation
to ensure that government spending never grows faster than a family’s
ability to pay for it. As Haridopolos leads the Florida Senate into the
2011 legislative session, Florida faces a $3.62 billion budget
shortfall. He has pledged to simply spend less and not to ask for
additional sacrifices from Florida's families and businesses.
Additionally, he is the sponsor of the 2011 Florida Health Care Freedom
Act to protect Floridians against Washington, DC health care mandates.
Throughout his legislative career he has also championed issues related
to the space program and NASA, instituting transparency and
accountability in state government, and identifying ways to correct and
prevent the wrongful incarceration of Floridians.
A graduate of Stetson University in 1992 with a B.A. in History, in
1993, he earned a Masters in History at the University of Arkansas. He
has been teaching at the college level since 1993. Haridopolos
represents District 26 in the Florida Senate, which includes parts of
Brevard, Indian River, Osceola, and St. Lucie Counties.

Fifteen years before there was a Community website known as OurtownFLA.com, there was a Community Cable Channel
run by Tony Masella in Kent, Ohio that covered local
events of interest for the community and “cablecasted” them
on the cable system. After four years of covering events for
the community, the end had come for this
experiment in journalism. The cable company was to be sold
at the end of 1984 and Masella decided to relocate to Land
O’Lakes. Before he did, however, he had one last assignment;
the 1984 Presidential Campaign Ohio Whistle Stop Tour by
President Ronald W Reagan. With Masella's move to Florida,
the tape of Reagan, only seen once, was lost and presumed
taped over and lost forever...A quarter
century later,
the historic footage was found. “I couldn’t believe what I
was seeing! It was like going back in time, said Masella. It
was the last event I covered for fifteen years, until I
started OurtownFla.com in Pasco County." Since then Masella
has had the
opportunity to cover President Bush, Governors’ Mitt Romney
and Sarah Palin and Senators’ Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio, "but Reagan was the most impressive, he said. Things had
been bad for a very long time when he took over, it was as
if we fell into a hole on November 22, 1963 and never
stopped falling. To a generation of young people he
represented hope and optimism for the future.”
The 25 minute tape will run on the award winning local
community website
www.OurtownFLA.com following the Super
Bowl to
commemorate President’s Reagan’s 100th birthday
and can be viewed there all month on the website via
YouTube.

On its face,
the parking rule Pasco County commissioners
passed Tuesday seems to offer a solution to the
sidewalk-blocking parking problems that plague
county neighborhoods. The reality is more
complicated, however.
The ordinance,
passed with minimal discussion, gives people
until mid-March to ask that the county's parking
ban be lifted in their communities. It gives
county traffic management officials the final
say on where and when on-street parking can be
allowed – from individual lots to alternating
sides of the street.
So far, no
one has taken commissioners up on their offer to
lift the ban, said traffic operations manager
Bob Reck.

organizations like Republicans 4 Family Values Club, we hope to make
their holiday a little better this year.”

Fabian Calvo Campaign
July 7th saw Florida House District 45 candidate
Fabian Calvo speaking at the Pasco County Young
Republicans Professionals club meeting at Beef
O'Bradys in Land O' Lakes. Mr. Calvo did not dwell
on his campaign but spoke convincingly of the need
of Americans to take our country back by taking
personal responsibility, getting educated about the
Constitution and the way politics is supposed to
work and the "urgency of now." The urgency of now
concept is a clarion call for conservatives to get
politically active, check out the voting record of
current politicians and get involved supporting
candidates who put Constitutional foundations first.
He recommended buying and reading "The 5,000 Year
Leap" as a great beginning to really understanding
what is happening to our country.
Calvo referred to President Obama as a
philosophical Marxist who is dedicated to turning
the USA into a big government controlled socialist
society. A second American Revolution is needed;
not one with guns, but with ideas and politically
intelligent voters who can turn America back to the
Founding Father's dream of a great nation.
Applause rang throughout the room at the close of
the address. Favorable comments circulated the room
in a general consensus that political conservatives
need to get to work now. Fabian Calvo is a talk

Pasco County Commissioner Ted Schrader won a
surprisingly easy victory Tuesday after weathering
weeks of attacks from challenger John Nicolette.
In a contest between two Beacon Woods
residents for the District 5 GOP primary, Mariano
had nearly 60 percent of the vote against Jenkins.

and State
Committeeman Position
Bill Bunting staved off a mutiny Tuesday
from opponents who tried to oust him as the local
Republican Party chairman. And he likely has
clinched a new post as Pasco's GOP state
committeeman.
Pasco
County Commissioner Jack Mariano was one of many Republicans politicians
to speak to the party faithful before the primary vote August 26 and ask
for their vote. The group met at Rapscallions in Land O’Lakes August 18.
A Response to Smear Letter from the
Republican Chairman Bill Bunting
The primaries will be over Tuesday
night, and we will have our Republican candidates for the
November elections. Regardless of who wins, we have to move
on and fight for Republicans in November. We also have
battles for Congressional seats and, of course, for
President that have to take a priority over any other
personal issues.
I have been trying to keep my role as
chairman of the Republican Party of Pasco separate from my
candidacy for Republican State Committeeman. Unfortunately,
recent negative mailers containing misleading and outright
false information have been sent by regular and email. These
misleading and false statements against me cast a shadow on
the Republican Party itself and, therefore, I need to
address them here. I think Republicans are due an
explanation.

Weatherford name without fear of confusing the voters. A victory party
