Scott Fink,
President of Hyundai of New Port Richey, presented a check for $1,500 to
the Sertoma Speech and Hearing Foundation to assist people with hearing
loss. Hearing Loss is the most
common birth defect nationally. Early detection and intervention is
vital for an infant to have the opportunity to access speech and other
sounds for learning and brain development. The Sertoma Speech & Hearing
Foundation of Florida assists hard of hearing babies and children to
hear the world around them so they can succeed personally, academically
and socially. The mission of the Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation of
Florida is to provide quality developmental and rehabilitative services,
products and education--primarily to children--throughout Florida, in a
caring and compassionate environment, never limited by the ability to
pay.

Chasco Fiesta is Underway! |
in Sims Park, New Port Richey |
|
|
Since 1922, Chasco Fiesta has honored the romantic
legend intertwining the lives of a Spanish boy and girl, a priest and
the Calusa Indian tribe who captured them after defeating a Spanish
expedition. According to the story, the boy and girl were later wed as
Queen Chasco and her consort Pithla. Today, Florida's Native American
heritage is revered, as evidenced by this annual event honoring all
Native American tribes. Experience Chasco Fiesta. See our Events

Children who attend Gulfside’s Mending Hearts Kids’ support
groups celebrated the changing of the seasons by planting
flowers at Gulfside’s Bereavement Center in the Children’s
Healing Garden on March 8.
“The children plant in the garden
seasonally,” said Sonia Quinones, Gulfside’s director of
bereavement and volunteers. “During the planting, we explain
the circle of life – that all that is born has a lifetime,
and at the end of that lifetime, people, animals and flowers
die.”John Lamm, from Home Depot in Port Richey, has been
involved with this project for the last five years. Home
Depot provides the flowers and mulch and Lamm helps the
children with planting the flowers in the garden. “Planting
of the flowers gives the bereavement counselors an
opportunity to talk about death and new beginnings,” said
Quinones. “Everything has a beginning and an end – the
flowers represent a new beginning. Once the seasons change,
the memories of the flowers and our loved ones will still
be in our minds and hearts.”
After the planting of the garden, the
children had a pizza party and ice cream. All received a
special stuffed animal to commemorate the experience.
The mission of Gulfside Regional Hospice is to
provide compassionate, quality care to individuals and their
loved ones as they face life-limiting illnesses. All
bereavement services are provided free of charge to Pasco
County residents regardless of previous participation with
hospice, and includes support groups, the Mending Hearts
Kids’ Program and individual counseling. For more

Connections Job Development
|
Program Graduates
|
|
On
February 23, Connections 'graduated' the first class to
complete a four-part customer service training. Led by
volunteer business coach, Joseph Trangata, a
nationally-recognized business development and training
professional, the group of Connections job seekers came
together to improve their customer service skills and learn
new ones.
Participant Rich R. reports, "This was a great class! Joe
was awesome and even though I'm a professional with years of
experience, I learned new ways of interacting with
customers, both internal and external."
Retiring last summer but unable
to ‘sit still’, Joe Trangata is a much in demand consultant
to large corporations statewide. “When we asked
companies what it is they really need in the way of
training, the overwhelming majority indicated customer
service training for their employees,” said Trangata.
As he explained, there is a disconnect between what
employees are trained to do, skills related to their jobs,
and their ability to deliver consistent, quality customer
service. Many employers have had to tighten budgets so
much and cut their HR training budgets. Customer
service training gets overlooked and it is a key piece that
can make or break a company, regardless of size.
“Connections was able to offer
this high-caliber class because Joe volunteered his time and
materials; he normally commands a price way beyond what we,
or many area small businesses could invest in”, stated
Judith Tilton, Connections Executive Director. “We are
grateful for his services and feel honored that our clients
are able to work with him at no charge.” Tilton reports
that another class will be offered next month and area
employers will be have the chance to enroll employees at a
nominal contribution to the non-profit. The job
seekers who completed the 8-hr. training now have one more
tool to set them apart from the competition.
If you
want to become a Customer Service Superstar or jump start
your job search, start with Connections Orientation program,
which is offered twice weekly. Call Connections at
727-849-7424 to register. Cost is FREE!
Connections Job Development Program, based in New Port
Richey since 1991, assists unemployed and under-employed
adults by helping them gain skills necessary to conduct a
successful job search and make a connection with area
employers. A 501(c)3 non-profit, all services are provided
to employers and job seekers at no charge. Connections
receives funding from the State of Florida and United Way of
Pasco, in addition to generous donations from clubs and
organizations, churches and individuals. Connections also
operates the Good Connections Thrift Shoppe, a ‘boutique’
resale store at 6636 US HWY 19 in New Port Richey (just
north of Main Street). Good Connections is open Monday –
Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM; donations are accepted daily.

through Thursday at 727/849-4724 or visit
