A special kind of Olympics was played Friday February 17th at Gaither High School; one that makes each child a winner, having a special need or not. It was a training day for “real” Special Olympics being held next month at USF. As special students arrived, each was paired with a Gaither High School student as a “buddy” for the day. The event began with three Special Operations Command Parachute Team, floating gracefully into the stadium to the music of Gaither’s band.  More than 350 special needs students from 16 Hillsborough County Schools ranging from elementary to high school age participated. The competition ranged from softball, tennis throw, running and standing long jumps and the shot put for field events that ran concurrent with numerous track events.

Major funding for this event was contributed by Gaither’s KEY club, NHS and other clubs in the school. Goodie bags given to each special student included a teddy bear donated by the Rough Riders and a cowboy hat. Graciously the community donated time talent, bottled water, T-shirts and their voices. This event started nine years ago with only a few schools attending. Let the games begin again next year for the 10th anniversary. Submitted to OurtownFLA.com by Lisa Kamps-Duac.
