Hannah Rutherford 4201…Michele Collet-Kriz of Seminole Electric Cooperative presents the Seminole Environmental Award to Wharton High School sophomore Hannah Rutherford for her work on senior division microbiology project "Heavy Metal Tolerance by Bacterium Thiomicrospira crunogena". Jasmine Roberts 4204… Jasmine Roberts 12, a 7th grader at Benito Middle School was awarded a top prize and a Busch Garden Science Achievement Award and Ashley Perkerson 13, an 8th grader at Berean Academy won the Lowry Park Zoo Environmental Awareness award (with Hundt Lory-not pictured). Jasmine’s project, comparing the ice used in drinks with the water from toilet bowls in the same restaurants, became a national interest story this week when the national press misunderstood the nature of the experiment making it seem like Tampa area restaurants were serving ice to their customers that were below the standard, 100 colony-forming units of bacteria per milliliter. Jasmine never found any Tampa area restaurants with a reading of over 54 and that case involved a self-serve ice machine. A less dramatic story would have been that the Tampa area restaurants may have some of the cleanest toilet water around. That fact might not seem important but it might impress the family dog.
