Pasco County Schools prepare
for 6 percent funding cuts
By RONNIE BLAIR
One area was off limits a year ago as the Pasco County School Board slashed its budget to deal with dwindling state revenue.
The board and Superintendent Heather Fiorentino steadfastly avoided cuts that would have directly affected the classroom.

This year - with costs increasing and revenue shortfalls looming once again - classroom programs likely won't get such protection.

"Nothing is off the table," Fiorentino told the board during a workshop Tuesday. "Last time we said anything that affects students and the classroom is off the table

Pasco County students enjoy healthy
snacks from vending machines
From tampabay.com
Until a week ago, Rushe Middle School sixth-grader Joey Warren didn't know that kids could get snacks out of vending machines at school. "I've only seen them on cartoon shows," Joey, 13, said, staring at the shiny new snack machines that had arrived in the cafeteria days earlier. "But I've never seen them in a school. They're cool and stuff."  The two vending machines generated instant buzz at Rushe Middle, where kids couldn't wait to plug in their quarters and dollars.  "They have things that kids would buy," said 6th grader Kyralexa Alvira, 12.

Things like baked chips, fruit leather, and reduced calorie cookies and muffins, and even healthier items such as hummus, carrots and ranch dressing, yogurt and peanut butter.

"They meet the Alliance for a Healthier Generation snack guidelines," said Rick Kurtz, food and nutrition services director for Pasco County schools. "It's only healthy snacks that are available."

Visually impaired Pasco teens learn
steps for Valentine's Day dance
in Port Richey
   By Tampabay .com
Like most teenagers, they feel awkward and unsure on a dance floor. They don't know how to ask someone to dance, or what to say when the song ends. Unlike most teenagers, they can't see well enough to follow the steps or read the visual cues from their partners. They're visually impaired, these teens. But there they are on the floor — swinging, box-stepping, tangoing. Sway, sway, rock step. Good! To get them ready for a Valentine's Day dance this weekend sponsored by the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind, a small group of Pasco teens got a crash course in cutting a rug.

Guy Doud speaks to Teachers at WC PAC

Hundred’s of Pasco County School District Principals, teachers, administrators, and other school personnel joined Superintendent Heather Fiorentino and School Board Members at a Welcome Back Event on August 20 to hear a wonderful speaker who made us all laugh a lot, think a lot, and cry a lot.  The event was held in the morning at the Performing Arts Center at Wesley Chapel High School and the evening event was held at River Ridge High School.  Guy Doud was the 1986 National Teacher of the Year who now speaks about his journey from a poor, fat, bald kid (his words), whose family was known as the town drunks, and how his Middle School teacher who was teaching his first year extended his hand to him, looked him in the eye, and welcomed him into his classroom.  He spoke to the crowd about the trials and tribulations that he went through and we all went through growing up and how this one teacher turned him around and gave him hope.  This teacher gave him a chance and treated him with respect and he went on to live a productive and happy life.  Inspiring the Dream was the message he wanted to convey and he did a spectacular job.  It made one think about going through Elementary and Middle School and the times that seemed so difficult at the time.  One of his best stories was about PE class and how he had to undress in front of other kids and learn about that cup thing.  Doud humorously observed how the female sign language interpreter portrayed that story.  He also spoke about (as a teacher) being the Hall Monitor and the Bathroom Monitor (“I wasn’t trained for this!”)  It was a great way to begin the year.   The Pasco Education Foundation (we are so fortunate to have this foundation) sponsored the event with the help of the Suncoast for Kids and the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union. Chip Wichmanowski, Executive Director of The Pasco Education Foundation said, “It was a great day in Pasco County schools!  Mr. Doud’s message on life, relationships, family, and most importantly, our work with students was truly one of the most inspirational presentations I have ever heard.  There was hardly a dry eye in the house as he made us laugh, cry and remember why we became involved in education in the first place.  The entire day was a huge success!”  As a high school language arts teacher in Brainerd, Minnesota Doud received the highest award that the education profession offers: he was chosen from more than two and one-half million teachers as the 1986 National Teacher of the Year for the United States of America, and was honored at a ceremony at the White House by then President Ronald Reagan. He told of meeting Reagan in the Oval Office and how impressive he was.

The Pasco Education Foundation’s next event is Understanding Poverty at 6:00 p.m. on September 9, at the Center For The Arts at Wesley Chapel.  This event will feature nationally acclaimed speaker, Dr. Ruby Payne.  Limited tickets are still on sale through the Foundation’s website at www.pascoeducationfoundation.org.  Proceeds from the event will be used to help fund the Foundation’s highly successful scholarship program, Take Stock in Children.  Proceeds benefit Take Stock in Children’s mission to help low income children maintain good behavior, graduate from high school, attend college and become productive citizens.   ABOUT TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN Founded in 1995 in response to the need for a scholarship program that provided more than just financial assistance to recipients, Take Stock in Children is an award-winning program that provides scholarships, mentors, and opportunities for a better future to Florida's most deserving children. This school-based mentoring organization has positively affected the lives of more than 15,000 children. Scholarships are purchased through the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, which provides matching funds to double the impact of scholarship donations to Take Stock in Children. Take Stock in Children is the only statewide scholarship program in Florida to provide trained, dedicated mentors representing every segment of society who mentor their students weekly from middle school through high school graduation.  To learn more, visit www.pascoeducationfoundation.org or contact Rosanne Heyser at (813) 794-2134.

Pasco County Superintendent of Schools’ Heather Fiorentino Speaks at Wesley Chapel Republican Club

By Anthony V. Masella Jr.

In the back seat of her Saturn, Heather Fiorentino keeps a construction hard hat that she is required to wear when she is on a school construction site, a constant reminder of one of the biggest challenges she faces as District Superintendent, construction of new schools to keep up with the unprecedented growth in population of Pasco County. Speaking at a meeting of the Republican Club of Wesley Chapel on March 8th, Fiorentino touched on many issues concerning the state of our fast growing school system.

Less than three years ago Fiorentino ran to replace the retiring Superintendent, Dr. John Long, against Chuck Rushe, the district's chief financial officer, for district superintendent. This year she will have open two new schools named in honor of these two much beloved public servants who have passed on, two of 13 new schools that will have been built in her first three and a half years in office. “When I first came in as District Superintendent and met with John Petrashek, Director of new Construction and Assistant Superintendent Ray Gadd, I first learned of the plan to build the schools but no land had yet been purchased”.  “It takes about 20 acres of land to build an Elementary school and 90 acres of land to build a High school” she said. “Petrashek and Gadd have done a great job but land is in high demand now, so we are considering a three story structure for the new High School near Hudson (EEE) that will only require about 40 acres.

Fiorentino, 49, spent 14 years as an elementary school teacher, was county commissioner and spent six years serving in the Florida State Legislature before being elected District Superintendent in November of 2004. In addition to dealing with a student population growth rate of 4% for the last 3 years, many of the systems older schools need repair. “Stewart Middle School in Zephyrhills is in the process of being renovated from the ground up, just part of the $ 89 million in construction projects slated to be completed this year, but next year might bring some relief as student growth is projected to be only 2 %” said Fiorentino.

Anyone operating an organization with a 1.4 Billion dollar budget, 9,308 employees and over 65,000 students would seem to have enough work to keep them busy but add to that the growing pains this county has and you wonder how there is any time to improve the quality of the learning environment.  “I have a hard working and dedicated staff that looks at best practices, what is working in other systems” she said. An example of this is teachers leading the curriculum to the essential question of the lesson then having the student summarize it, in writing so that the teacher can tell if the student comprehended the lesson. This has been shown to increase comprehension by 40%. It is this type of philosophy, that states that everyone in the system needs to be continually educated from the administration, to the teachers and students, that have made this district one of only 8 out of the 67 state school district to have earned SAC District wide accreditation.

In other news, new buses are now being delivered with seat belts installed, the Penny for Pasco tax has helped the school system keep up with the growing needs and population, communication between the teachers, students and parents have been greatly improved thanks to the esembler program that allows parents to access student progress online and 90 % of teachers have been rated highly qualified this year. Plans and concepts for the future are Workforce Development, working with area businesses to teach to the jobs of tomorrow since 4 out of 10 student do not choose to go to college and developing the STAR program to reward teacher excellence.
