Saturday, Mar 30, 2013 | On Target Page: Greater Pasco County, Dade City, Dade City Community Events
By Citizen Journalist Richard K. Riley.

The first FOTMC was held at the Pioneer Florida Museum in 1982. We return home in 2013 for our 31st annual Championship and another 30 years. The 2013 Guest of Honor is Mac Benford. There will be camping in the rough, sorry no hookups. For more information, contest rules, past Guests of Honor, ticket and camping prices, or to find out more about the Florida Old Time Music Championship visit.

Join us at the Pioneer Florida Museum & Village for our annual Florida Old Time Music Championship. Back at the Pioneer Florida Museum for the second year, we hope to have a bigger crowd than we did at last year’s homecoming. Banjos, mandolins, fiddles, and dulcimers are going to be just some of the instruments used during the weekend. At the center of all these instruments and music are the two men in charge of the whole operation Jim Strickland, and Ernie Williams. For 30 years these two men have been playing, teaching and organizing the championship to keep music at its roots.

Every year the Championship honors an old time musician by having them as a special entertainment guest. Mac Benford has this year’s honor of playing for the championship. He has been playing professionally since the 1960’s, and has promoted old time and bluegrass music since the beginning. Originally appearing in various bluegrass and country bands, Mac has more recently been a solo artist and sought after instructor. He will be playing three sets, one Friday at 8 pm and two Saturday at 10:30 am and 8 pm. Make sure you come and see him play.

Attendees will have the opportunity to either participate in the championship or just enjoy the wonderful music. Clayton Jones will be putting on a guitar workshop Saturday morning at 10 am, so make sure you sign up for that as there is limited space. There will also be some vendors selling various music items and our own museum gift shop. The concession stand will be open with beans and rice, hamburgers, hotdogs and sides. Special Admission prices for the event are $5 Friday evening, $10 all day Saturday, and $15 for the weekend. There is no charge for parking. No coolers or pets (service animals only). The museum is located one mile north of downtown Dade City, off of US 301 at15602 Pioneer Museum Road.

The Pioneer Florida Museum is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Florida’s pioneer heritage. The museum is open regularly Tuesday through Saturday 10 am to 5 pm with general admission. Regular general admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 for students ages 6-18, and children 5 and under are free.
