West Pasco Chamber of Commerce Debate for State Senate District 17

But the three men seeking the Republican nomination for the seat see no problem serving constituents on both sides of the line."Unfortunately, the Tampa Bay area has been divided politically over the years," said John Legg, a member of the state House who is hoping to move over to the Senate. "This is an opportunity to unify the Tampa Bay area."

"When you are elected, you don't look at county lines," said Rob Wallace, a former state representative seeking a return to Tallahassee. John Korsak, who lives in Lutz on the Hillsborough side, said making District 17 a unified district is important.

"Historically, it hasn't been unified," Korsak said. "It has been held by a Tampa person." Most recently that person was Jim Norman, who originally planned to seek re-election but withdrew from the race last month. Legg, Wallace and Korsak faced off Thursday evening at a candidate forum at Pasco-Hernando Community College. The forum was sponsored by the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce.

The winner of the Republican primary will face Democrat Wes Johnson in November.
