Here is the latest information from Pasco County Emergency Management:

The Florida Department of Health in Pasco County cautions citizens that wildfire smoke is a respiratory irritant that can cause scratchy throat or irritated eyes and nose. Smoke can also worsen conditions such as asthma and other chronic respiratory or lung conditions. Dust generated from increased wildfire response activity on dirt roads may also worsen these conditions.

The Florida Department of Health in Pasco County offers these tips to protect your family from smoke:

  • Pay attention to local air quality reports, news coverage or health warnings related to smoke.

  • Use common sense when outside conditions are smoky. Avoid prolonged outdoor activities.

  • If smoky conditions occur in your area, anyone with existing medical conditions should limit outdoor activities.

  • If smoky conditions occur, stay indoors and run your air conditioner, if you have one. Keep the fresh air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent bringing additional smoke inside. For best results, run the air conditioning with re-circulated air.

  • Follow your doctor’s advice about taking medications and follow your asthma management plan if you have asthma or other lung diseases. Call your doctor if symptoms worsen.

FROM PCFR Battalion 4 Photo Page on Facebook:

“Going to violate my own rule by posing LOTS of photos as this is one that will be remembered. PCFR E14, and B14 responded to a report of a small brush fire around 1030 this morning in Starkey Wilderness Park. Capt. Scott Fodor advised it was deep in the woods and requested FFS, appeared to be small but growing. As of this posting the fire has exceeded 1000 acres and has very little containment. B/C Dennis De Salvo (B/C2) established Command and soon as he made his size up called for additional resources. This writer has seen a fair amount of fires but the fire behavior on this one I am not sure if I have seen in Pasco before. Fifty foot flames fronts jumping fire breaks as wide as the power line easements and racing more than a mile in less than 15 minutes. Training Chief Shawn Whited took Operations while Chief DeSalvo maintained Command and placed his CP away from the fire fight in a picnic shelter area letting him concentrate on the long term needs.Chief DeSalvo did a great job controling the scene. FFS at last count had 14 Tractor Plows and another Strike Team arrived this evening. A Blackhawk helicopter was used before the smoke conditions inhibited. Not sure if I can get all the companies, E14, E30, E11, E35, B11, B14, B17, B30, AT1, R30, B/C2, Chief5, EM1, EM3, FFS, PCSO, T30, Utility35 Utility28, Jason Tucker, Jonathan Robinson, Scott Cassin, John Fish-Chief, Kathy Hertzog, Jeff Higdon, Chris Kempton, Todd Milam, Chad Williamson, Cody Sikes, Lamar Gibson, Gabe Croft”
