The 150th Anniversary of Juneteenth Celebration (Photos by Tony Masella & David Wright)

The 150th anniversary of Juneteenth, had a great group of vendors, entertainers, guests, and of course the many volunteers who made this a tremendous event, sponsored by Wesley Chapel Nissan, on Saturday, June 20, 2015. June 19 is known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day, and marks the anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865 and more generally throughout the Confederate South. The term is a portmanteau of “June” and “nineteenth” and commemorates the date when the Union General Gordon Granger arrived at Galveston Island, Texas with 2,000 troops to establish a federal presence in Texas and officially free slaves in the once republic.
