Dade City merchants created an official organization, and their first act was to rescue the Spring Antique Faire.
Dade City merchants have been meeting as an “unofficial” organization for a couple of years with Margaret Angell as the chairwoman, but now they are setting up officers and filing paperwork to become a tax-exempt nonprofit organization under the name Downtown Dade City Merchants Association.
“We’re going to take over the antiques fair, but we have to do a little pinch-hitting on this particular one,” Angell said.
The Main Street organization, whose goal was improving the appearance and economic stability of downtown Dade City, had suffered a financial decline since 2007, said Downtown Dade City Main Street board member and treasurer Julie Cotton.
Main Street organized the Antique Faire and other events. When the organization closed, the scheduled Spring Antique Faire was canceled, Angell said.
“The merchants, especially the antique dealers, thought it was important to go on with it so we quickly put together a plan to continue the event.” She called it a “rescue plan.”

The Spring Antique Faire took on a different look for this year.
In the past the spring and fall antique fairs have been held in the Eighth Street parking lots. The merchant association plans to keep up that tradition starting in the fall, but for the event the antique vendors set up throughout Dade City’s downtown area.
Antiques sales were set up in front of local antique dealers while dealers with parking lot space made those areas available for out-of-town vendors. There also was an arts and crafts fair at Dade City Commons for vendors selling wares that are not strictly antiques, Angell said.
The Spring Antique Faire was from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
