Pasco County Commissioners National Hispanic Heritage Month Proclamation

In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to designate a week in September as National Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988, the observance was expanded to a month long celebration from September 15th until October 15th. During National Hispanic Heritage Month, Americans celebrate the culture and traditions of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

As of April 1,2010, the Hispanic population of the United States was estimated at 50.5 million, making people of Hispanic origin the nation’s largest ethnic or race minority with an estimated 1.1 million Hispanic veterans serving in the United States Armed Forces. The United States Census Bureau estimates that there are approximately 1.6 million Hispanic-owned businesses across the United States which generates billions in revenue each year. On the local level, the Hispanic/Latino/Mexican community surrounding Dade City has made many positive contributions to the community through their dedication to family, diversity, work, and culture. Additionally, Farm Workers Self Help, Inc. has worked diligently for the past thirty years assisting in the development of the community, particularly in Tommytown, through advocacy, education, and organization which is now embedded in schools, businesses, churches, and law enforcement agencies. The Board hereby declares September 15, 2014 through October 15, 2014, as Hispanic Heritage Month in Pasco County, and commends Hispanic Americans for their cultural and business contributions to the nation and the local community, and urges all citizens to participate in celebrations honoring Hispanic culture.
