Zephyrhills
Moose Supports the Troops
Click

The
folks at the Zephyrhills Moose Family Center heard that Bob Williams
needed help to cover the shipping cost that his group “Support the
Troops” incurs sending packages to our troops overseas, they wanted to
help. Mr. Robert Williams (white shirt) and his group sends out
about 215 boxes each week to U.S. military units in Iraq, Afghanistan,
Kuwait, Qatar, and Kyrgyzstan. Zephyrhills Moose Family Center
Administrator Gary Belyea (white hat) and many other volunteers
designated Fridays, as a special “Red Letter Day” for the troops.
Members of the group wear red shirts and portions of the proceeds of the
Moose go to “Support the Troops” fund.
On a daily basis Williams will receive wish lists from the troops either
via email or through their families or friends. “Thanks to the efforts
of the Zephyrhills Moose Family Center and their Red Friday campaign, we
will do our best to fulfill those requests. The basic items we take for
granted here can make a real difference in the quality of life our
service personnel experience when deployed in combat zones and remote
locations” said Williams. The packages they send out contain a variety
of items popular with the troops, including coffee, snack foods,
batteries, DVD’s, and personal toiletries. Some of these goods are
donated by local businesses and organizations; others must be purchased
to meet the need. “We are delighted to work with any company or
organization interested in having a drive to collect items to send to
our troops or to raise funds for postage” said Williams. Mr. Williams
says that this is an on-going project therefore they must continue to
seek the community’s help with the increasing postage expenses. The
cost to ship one box can range from $20 to $45, depending on the

The House System Field Day
In
the tradition of preparatory education the House System is an important
part and feature of an Academy at the Lakes educational experience.
Students and their families are assigned to one of four K-12 Houses -
Peregrine, Kestrel, Osprey, and Nighthawk. During the course of the
academic year many events and traditions unique to each House occur. The
House Field Day event engages all the Houses in field events and
competitions designed to build a sense of community and leadership. Each
of the Houses is composed of students in grades K-12 who compete with
each other in foot races, relays, games, an opening parade, and other
related events. The Opening Parade is a sea of color - all students
wearing the color of their House in preparation for the day's events.
Observers view high school seniors holding the hands of Kindergarten
students within their House. Healthy competition and a strong sense of
community abounds! The House System is unique to Academy at the Lakes
and the results of building community in this manner are very
significant.

MARTINEZ MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER FINISH 2008
WITH AN UNDEFEATED SEASON
By
Sheila Tramontana

Martinez
Middle School soccer players (from front to back) Ashelynne Hanold,
Heather Zweben, and Miranda Gonzalez, bring the ball up field against
Hill MS. The Martinez girls have a wonderful season finishing out 5 - 0
this year. The two top scorers for the year were C. Gonzalez and T.
Valley. They each showed tremendous heart and hustle each and every
game. The Goalie, Courtney Keene also had a great season and like
Gonzalez and Valley will be heading off to begin their high school
careers and will be greatly missed on the team. There are still several
6th and 7th graders returning next year that will keep Martinez Soccer
at a very competitive level. …Martinez Middle School soccer players
(from left) Marley Opila and Lauren Garris separate the Hill Middle
School player from the ball. Opila, who scored the game tying goal as
well as the final penalty kick in the overtime win in the final game,
will be leading the charge for next years team. Coach Wynn said that he
could not ask for a better group of players. They were outstanding
soccer players, as well as terrific students with great attitudes. Coach
Wynn and the Martinez girls invite all Lutz residents to come out to
their games and support the action!

John Long Middle School Welcomes Coach D

Click
>>>
Here
Tuesday, March 4 John Long Middle invited nationally recognized speaker
Coach D to help with FCAT motivation. Coach D states, “Young people must
be challenged to develop themselves to their fullest potential, or they
face hopelessness and the frustration of unfulfilled dreams.” Darrell
“Coach D” Andrews, nationally known speaker and author of several books
including, “Believing the HYPE: 7 Keys to Motivating Students of
Color” and “The Purpose Living Teen: A Teen’s Guide to Living
Your Dreams,” will push students to press on towards inspired
attitudes and high expectation so they can do well on their upcoming
FCAT. Coach D regularly shares with students how to connect tomorrow’s
dream to today’s education.
“The
challenges we are seeing in today’s schools create a sense of urgency in
showing students the significance of individual dreams combined with
hope and attitude. That is what really will help them excel on tests and
in life,” said Andrews. “I know that a student with a dream is a student
with a future. My desire is for all students to have a dream, live it
and fully understand the importance that education plays in living it.”
Using humor and real life
metaphors to remove negative, non-productive attitudes, Coach D relates
to pre-teens and teenagers in a unique way. Andrews was raised by a
single mother who was also a high school dropout, but despite his
challenging background, he determined to change his life and became a
three-sport all-star in high school, the captain of his college football
team and the first in his family to graduate from college. …...When
asked by Coach D what she wanted to be, JLMS student Michelle Dowling
answered, “A doctor or a lawyer.” ….Following the assembly Amber
Kutscher stated, “I really liked the program and I feel I am going to do
better on the FCAT.”
