Sew Much More - Quilting!

Summer camp for youth

Quilting is Sew Much More… Fun!

FCS/4-H Summer Quilting Camp program for youth was held July 13-17, 2009 8:30am to 4:30pm in the Women’s Building at the Pasco County Fairgrounds in Dade City.  There were 10 youth and 9 volunteers who participated.

The youth were surprised to see all new sewing machines that were donated by local individuals and organizations.  (That made it a lot easier on the volunteers since some of the Extension machines used in the past dated back to the 1950’s.)  The room was filled with samples of family quilts on loan from many of the volunteers.  Many people donated fabric and other supplies as well, the $25 fee that covered lunches, morning and afternoon snacks, some supplies and sewing kits, etc. that the students took home to encourage continuing their newly learned skills.

Participants (youth as well as adult volunteers) learned all about the different types of quilts, the color wheel and fabric selection, basic sewing and safety skills, how to cut squares, piece/sew/press them together to make a 9-patch quilt top/wall hanging of their own design, add batting, quilt, finish/bind and label their creations.

Anyone who did not finish or would like to do even more can come to the Sew New sewing club that meets in the Women’s Building at the Pasco County Fairgrounds in Dade City, the 2nd & 4th Saturdays of the month from 9am to 2pm.   Come join us!

For more information, contact Betsy Crisp, Extension Family & Consumer Sciences Faculty,  at the Pasco County Extension office (352) 521-4288.

East Pasco Pirates U16 B Perfect Season

East Pasco Pirates U-16 Boys Competitive

Has “Perfect Season” 2007-08

The Dade City community continues to excel in accomplished students and athletes for yet another year. Our 2007-08 U16 competitive soccer team was comprised of mostly 14yr olds that “played up” this past season due to picking up a couple older boys. The team has seen three coaching changes in three consecutive years, but appears to hold onto their chemistry, ending the season under Coach “Chano” Benitez and Pedro Garcia.

Although they had to enter the season in Division III, they easily went undefeated at 10-0! There were 46 goals scored by and only 7 scored on us.  The core group of boys has been together since about 2001. The team seems to get better every year, not-withstanding an obvious top goal producer. Many of the team members are capable of unselfish leadership when called upon. There are multiple goal scorers and a multi-talented roster that can fill any position whenever it is asked of them.

Injuries plagued the boys during the Region-C Cup tournament yet irregardless, the team went undefeated in Round I against Division I teams. Only after advancing to the finals did they suffer their one and only loss for the entire year.

The Dade City area is a small town and is limited on its resources compared to other clubs, so the teams necessary versatility seems to be “the glue” that holds them together with great results. The proud families and friends hope to see the boys pave their own successes in the next four years of high school, following the accomplished footsteps of the recent Pasco High Varsity soccer success which is also comprised of some of their older siblings. About half the U-16 boys had also opened their high school freshman year on the JV soccer team posting a 12-1 season, the only loss to a penalty kick. The majority of the team has a dual sports role with Track & Field events including Cross Country participation.

Our goalie Jeffrey Wilkes only gave up 4 goals the entire schedule. In the next school year 08/09 the competitive team will be back together once the remaining middle school boys start their freshmen high school year.

Core Group- Matt Boyle, Carson Brock, Dillon Dunbar, Eric Garcia, Anthony Plourde, Ryan Summner, Oscar Martinez, and

Miguel Mendoza.

Post Core Players:  Daniel Cano, Danny Corona, Ricky Corona, Alex Garcia, Will Fletcher, Jose Flores, Jose Paniagua, Jeffrey Wilkes, and Luke Singer (from LOL).

Pasco defender Alex Garcia gets takes the edge during the finals in Region Cup tournament which unfortunately ended up as the only loss for the entire season for his club.

Johnson, Executive of the Pasco County Boy Scout District. “I hope it isn’t valued over twenty-five dollars” queried the Attorney General. “Actually about $9.95” confessed Johnson. … Attorney General and Dade City resident Kurt Browning tells the story of how, following a second surgery on his back this past December, he gets a call from the Governor-Elect’s office about serving as Attorney General. Although Browning was unable to drive the long distance for the interview he did finally get the position. He admits that he does miss living in Pasco County and seeing his friends in Dade City and with only a $400 increase in his annual salary for his troubles, Browning feels it is his duty to serve the people of the state of Florida for now and looks forward to the time he can move back home. …Scouting was a big part of Attorney General Kurt Browning life, not so much when he was growing up but as a father, both sons Keith and Christopher were Eagle Scouts and all believe that Scouting is for Life. “I carry the Scouts Oath on my key chain and look at it every day, ‘On my honor I will do my best, To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.’ A scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent” That is what Luther Rozar is all about, and the people of Pasco County will be forever in his debt.
