HAPPY ARBOR DAY  at San Antonio Elementary

By Karen Bryant, Recycling Coordinator

We had a wonderful brisk morning planting trees with our
Pasco County Forester, Arthur Clothier at San Antonio Elementary School.
It was a great day to share with our students the importance of what trees
mean in our environment.  I have attached a few photos and will send a few
additional emails with the other photos.  Thank you in advance for sharing
our story with your readers.  We are very proud of our students for their
participation!

Several special guests were in attendance - Allen Altman, Board Member;
Kathryn Starkey, Board Member; Joanne Hurley, Board Member; Beth Rawls,
Pre-K Services; Laura Hill and Mark Butler, Curriculum and Instructional
Services; Karen Bryant, Recycling Coordinator; and Arthur Clothier, Pasco
County Forester.

All of the students and faculty at San Antonio
Elementary will receive a slash pine seedling at the end of the day to take
home and plant courtesy of the Florida Division of Forestry.  Parent Teacher
Association volunteers have package the individual trees into bags with
planting instructions so the trees will be planted properly.

Karen Bryant, Recycling Coordinator presented
the school with a plaque thanking the school for their conservation efforts.
Arthur Clothier, Pasco County Forester along with the Student Council
planted one jem magnolia tree along the side of the school's covered play
area.  McMullen Wholesale Nursery and Pinelake Nursery generously donated 2 jem magnolias and 2 crape myrtles to the school.  During the planting, Arthur Clothier told the students about the history of Arbor Day, discussed invasive trees, importance of planting native trees, and discussed how trees impact our environment.

The presentation held in the cafeteria started with Principal Vanessa Hilton
welcoming everyone to the school.  The fifth grade class were a very polite
and respectful audience as they listened to their peers Guillermo Aliva,
Hannah Chambers, and Maggie Plourde read poems about Arbor Day.  Mrs. Judy Sumner's second grade class sang a song about Arbor Day and Student Council representatives assisted by passing out programs and escorting everyone to the outdoor planting site.
