Lake Myrtle Elementary School is the first existing Pasco County Elementary School to purchase an AED (Defibrillator)

Lake Myrtle Elementary School Principal, John Abernathy aka as the "Trail Blazer", is the first existing Pasco County Elementary School to purchase an AED (Defibrillator).  Being "PREPARED" is a priority.  Principal Abernathy wants the community to know, that LMES is conscientious and concerned with the safety and well being of the community they serve.  With this endeavor, it is sought not to only prevent catastrophic situations, but to incorporate a healthy lifestyle and awareness of ones self and our community.   Neighbors helping neighbors.  LMES has established an onsite Emergency Action Plan, utilizing 13 Teachers certified in CPR & AED implementation.  In an emergency situation, the teachers are dispatched to act in a certain predetermined job.  Lonnie Clark, with S.A.F.E. - The Philips AED Master Distributor and American Red Cross Authorized Provider, stated that principal John Abernathy is always on the "Cutting Edge".   S.A.F.E. is currently working with Philips Medical Systems to offer our Pasco County Schools an AED Grant.   Clark states, "The AED Grants allotted to the Pasco County Schools is a part of S.A.F.E.'s visionary school project." Each year Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) strikes approximately 340,000 people in the U.S. alone.    Sadly, fewer than 5% survive, often because emergency medical services cannot reach them in time.  Every minute that passes, one has a 10% lesser chance of surviving.  SCA's occur when the electrical system of the heart becomes chaotic,  causing it to stop beating effectively.  Lacking proper blood flow, the person becomes unresponsive, stops breathing, and will die unless promptly treated.   CPR is importation, but it alone cannot restore a normal heart rhythm.  A "shock" from a defibrillator is the most effective way to restore the heart's normal pumping rhythm.  For more Philips AED or CPR information, contact S.A.F.E.  Lonnie Clark at (813)784-0381 or www.SwimSafeBeSafe.com.

Schools Tools Program

by Anthony V. Masella Jr

7645…Saturday August 5th, collected school supplies were distributed to needy children with the help of Anna Fulks, Chair of the Community “Schools Tools Program”, Joe Labarbera, manager of the Wesley Chapel Sweet Bay Supper Market, Volunteer Nancy Carpenter, Wesley Chapel Elementary Principal Cindy Harper, Deputy Bales, Co-Chair Maritza Torres, Derek Piccinini, Bob Loring, head elk of the Toys for Tots, Courtney Lemay, Kari Durocher, Zyandria Vega, Julian Norat and Rey Pate.

Partnering with the Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce, the Sheriff's Department and Pasco Fire and Rescue, the group “Schools Tools Program” actively collected school supplies at Sam's Club and the Sweet Bay Supper market. In Zephyrhills, the Boy & Girl partnered with the Zephyrhills Police and Fire Department and they actively collected supplies at Wal-Mart and K-mart.

Expecting to provide a backpack load of school supplies to at least 500 needy children, the group wishes to help at risk kids.  “These children are the same "at risk" Tots that we attempt to serve at Christmas time” says Bob Loring, head elk of the Toys for Tots. “Also, local Rotary clubs and many local businesses allow us to place school supply 'drop boxes' at their locations, as with Toys for Tots & our TAD model, we attempted to employ a total community approach to this challenge” says Loring.
