Lake Myrtle Elementary School is the first existing Pasco County Elementary School to purchase an AED (Defibrillator)

Lake Myrtle Elementary School Principal, John Abernathy aka as the "Trail Blazer", is the first existing Pasco County Elementary School to purchase an AED (Defibrillator).  Being "PREPARED" is a priority.  Principal Abernathy wants the community to know, that LMES is conscientious and concerned with the safety and well being of the community they serve.  With this endeavor, it is sought not to only prevent catastrophic situations, but to incorporate a healthy lifestyle and awareness of ones self and our community.   Neighbors helping neighbors.  LMES has established an onsite Emergency Action Plan, utilizing 13 Teachers certified in CPR & AED implementation.  In an emergency situation, the teachers are dispatched to act in a certain predetermined job.  Lonnie Clark, with S.A.F.E. - The Philips AED Master Distributor and American Red Cross Authorized Provider, stated that principal John Abernathy is always on the "Cutting Edge".   S.A.F.E. is currently working with Philips Medical Systems to offer our Pasco County Schools an AED Grant.   Clark states, "The AED Grants allotted to the Pasco County Schools is a part of S.A.F.E.'s visionary school project." Each year Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) strikes approximately 340,000 people in the U.S. alone.    Sadly, fewer than 5% survive, often because emergency medical services cannot reach them in time.  Every minute that passes, one has a 10% lesser chance of surviving.  SCA's occur when the electrical system of the heart becomes chaotic,  causing it to stop beating effectively.  Lacking proper blood flow, the person becomes unresponsive, stops breathing, and will die unless promptly treated.   CPR is importation, but it alone cannot restore a normal heart rhythm.  A "shock" from a defibrillator is the most effective way to restore the heart's normal pumping rhythm.  For more Philips AED or CPR information, contact S.A.F.E.  Lonnie Clark at (813)784-0381 or www.SwimSafeBeSafe.com.
